Exploring the Generative AI Challenge at Western

Have you noticed how conversations about generative AI are popping up everywhere lately — from classrooms to coffee breaks? Western’s Generative AI Challenge invites all of us to slow down, think carefully, and explore what these tools really mean for teaching, learning, and research.Hosted by Western’s Centre for Teaching and Learning and Chief AI Officer, the Challenge unfolds over ten weeks as a series of short, thought-provoking posts from guest contributors across campus. Each week brings a new perspective — from the creative to the critical — on how AI is shaping knowledge, ethics, pedagogy, assessment, and even our sense of what it means to think.

The goal isn’t to convince anyone to use AI tools, but to understand them — their possibilities, pitfalls, and implications for human creativity and judgment. Whether you’re experimenting with ChatGPT in the classroom, pondering AI-generated art, or just curious about how it all works, this series is a great entry point.

My Contribution: Scholarly Publishers and the Use of AI

I’m excited to share that I joined this year’s Generative AI Challenge as one of the guest contributors! My post, “Scholarly Publishers and the Use of AI” , looks at how major academic publishers are responding to the rise of generative AI — and what it means for authors, editors, and readers.

TL;DR

Artificial intelligence isn’t new, but the arrival of tools like ChatGPT has accelerated its integration into scholarly publishing. My piece explores how major publishers such as Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, and SAGE are shaping policies on AI use in writing, image generation, data analysis, and peer review. Across the board, there’s agreement that AI tools can assist, but not author. I also discuss the broader ethical and practical implications — transparency, accountability, and how librarians and researchers can navigate this shifting terrain with confidence and curiosity.
